This documentary from German TV channel WDR uses archive footage to tell the story of the major fires and gives eyewitnesses, rescuers and helpers a chance to have their say.

A film for „Heimatflimmern“ by Brigitte Büscher and Benjamin Braun. Production company: Ansager und Schnipselmann GmbH & Co KG. This film was produced in 2021, all statements and facts correspond to the status at that time and have not been updated since then. „Heimatflimmern“ is a documentary format that tells exciting stories from the federal state of Northrhine-Westphalia.
What was the overall goal of the Use Case?
  • Creating awareness about increasing risks of wildfires because of a sequence of years with drought periods.
    • Extensive wildfires sometimes require the evacuation of citizens living in the vicinity of the fire ground.
  • Behaviour appropriate to the fire risk is absolutely essential when in the forest, especially during drought.
What worked well and could be recommended to others?
Good Cross-border (cross-jurisdiction / cross-country) cooperation of fire services, police and public authorities was necessary to meet the challenges related to wide spread wildfire.
What limitations were identified?
Radio communication did not work well.
