This documentary from German TV channel WDR uses archive footage to tell the story of the major fires and gives eyewitnesses, rescuers and helpers a chance to have their say in German language.

This film was produced in 2021, all statements and facts correspond to the status at that time and have not been updated since then. „Heimatflimmern“ is a documentary format that tells exciting stories from the federal state of Northrhine-Westphalia.
What was the overall goal of the Use Case?
  • Creating awareness about increasing risks of wildfires because of a sequence of years with drought periods.
    • Extensive wildfires sometimes require the evacuation of citizens living in the vicinity of the fire ground.
  • Behaviour appropriate to the fire risk is absolutely essential when in the forest, especially during drought.
What worked well and could be recommended to others?
Good Cross-border (cross-jurisdiction / cross-country) cooperation of fire services, police and public authorities was necessary to meet the challenges related to wide spread wildfire.
What limitations were identified?
Radio communication did not work well.
